Hubby and I did an early morning bike ride along the Erie Canal Trail, riding down the hill from the house to the village of Pittsford and heading west along the trail to Brighton. We got off the trail and headed toward my absolute favorite bagel place, Bagel Land, at Twelve Corners in Brighton, waiting in line to buy a dozen mixed delights. The guy in line behind me was visiting as well and when I told him this was the best bagels in the land, he said, “Yeah, maybe. I’m from Manhattan.” In other words, “WE have the best bagels, but I’ll believe you that this place is the best in downstate New York.” I stood corrected.
Later in the morning, I sprung Mom from her joint again, bringing her back to my sister’s house for church TV. She is now a new member of Third Presbyterian Church of Rochester. She was recorded being inducted last week, and the video was shown during the church service. I made pork loin, roasted potatoes, roasted brussels sprouts, and steamed broccoli for a big lunch. Mom and Hubby took naps afterward and then we headed for Lake Ontario and had a long drive along the lake front. The sun was full on and there a bit of nippy breeze in the air but perfect for an outing. We stopped by the beach park and Hubby pushed Mom while I knee scootered out on the long pier to the lighthouse. Lots of folks having big family picnics in the park, and some brave souls were even swimming.
Mom crashed out on the couch when we got home, while I made supper and Hubby went for another bike ride. She has been so amazingly contented all weekend—those drugs must be doing wonders. She seems to have settled in with little complaint; well, maybe a little complaint here and there but nothing radical and no anger. We’ve really enjoyed our visit, and I know she has. We talked about her parents and her childhood. We traded stories about her Aunt Mabel, a dear character whom everybody loved. She told us that when she moved from Ohio back to Pennsylvania as a little girl she sold her bike for $5 to buy a doll because all her new-found friends had dolls and she didn’t. She didn’t want to be left out and besides, her new town was too hilly for bicycling. Her short-term memory is still sliding, so we heard a lot of the same stories and answered a lot of the same questions multiple times. But I wasn’t bothered. Quiet evening tonight before we head out early tomorrow for home.
