Today is International Day of Peace, and that documentary we watched last night (Kiss the Ground) got me thinking about an idea for spreading it. Instead of sending cash aid to struggling and worn-torn countries, we should send teams of agronomists, conservation land managers, land reclamation experts, soil and water scientists, and similar specialists to help rehabilitate desertified and other damaged land with the intention of growing food and restoring the natural order of, well, nature. Yes, it’s like the Peace Corps, only on a larger scale and focused on growing better food using better means through land restoration. No politics, no setting up puppet regimes, no religious proselytizing, no big ag or chemical companies, just helping restore the order of nature and teaching people how to grow food the regenerative agricultural way. Restoring food security would go a long way in restoring peace. We aren’t willing to look at the real causes of war (too many people competing for dwindling resources), instead throwing hand grenades as solutions and waging war to “keep the peace”—and grab what’s left of the resources. I’m going to think about this more while giving thanks for our garden.
